DESCRIPTION
The Suquamish Tribe worked with the Kitsap County Public Works Department to permit and construct a bridge to replace the culvert at Kitty Hawk Drive. This project will continue the restoration efforts to restore the Chico Estuary, a priority in the watershed. This project ranks #3 on the Kitsap County Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) plan. Construction began in June 2014.
This project changed from replacing the Kitty Hawk culvert with a bridge to entirely removing the culvert and ending the road to maximize tidal inundation. The road fill was also removed and the creek was diverted to its original path with a more sinuous course.
Large woody debris were installed along the stream to create pools, habitat for juvenile salmon, and stabilization. The graded slope where the road ended will be re-vegetated with native plants. A new road was constructed to provide access to the homes north of the estuary that relied on Kitty Hawk road.
This project was accomplished with a suite of funding sources utilized for Acquisition, Design, and Construction.
