DESCRIPTION

This grant seeks funding for the construction phase of a current WRIA#8-supported and SRFB-funded design phase of a project that will restore natural riverine processes in the Upper Royal Arch Reach of the Cedar River. The project is being designed to benefit aquatic, riparian, and floodplain functions and habitats by restoring the connectivity of the active channel to parts of its floodplain and historic side-channel therein. The project will improve habitat for Chinook and other salmon and trout, but is most centrally being designed to address the top priority limiting factor of lacking juvenile refuge and rearing habitat for Chinook in the mainstem Cedar.

All prior remnants of residential development and all bank armoring structures will be removed, and an extensive network of primary, secondary, and tertiary side channels with continuous annual flow are to be constructed and or reconnected to the main river channel to provide continuous off-channel fish habitat access. In addition extensive riparian wetland areas will be enhanced and newly created.

The hydrologic floodplain connectivity on the river's right bank will also modestly reduce flood impacts to the residentially inhabited opposite left bank area during flood events. This goal is to be accomplished through removal and set-back of a public residential street, significant fill removal in the floodplain, removal
