DESCRIPTION
Seattle Public Utilities acquired two target parcels along the Cedar River in King County, totaling 11.88 acres of riparian and floodplain habitat with a combined 1580 feet of streambank, located at approximately River Mile 14.5 near the intersection of Highway 169 and Highway 18 in Maple Valley. The near term project goal is to protect and restore riparian habitat. Residential structures were demolished, and invasive plants were removed. Native riparian trees and shrubs were planted using other funding. The long term project goal is to secure land necessary to enable a floodplain restoration project along the Royal Arch Reach by removing bank hardening structures such as levees and revetments, and reconnecting the wide, low gradient floodplain to the Cedar River to provide important rearing and refuge habitat to benefit Chinook salmon, as well as Puget Sound coho and Steelhead. To date Seattle Public Utilities has acquired a total of 26.3 acres in this reach, with approximately 37 acres remaining to be acquired to enable an approximately 63-acre floodplain restoration project.
