DESCRIPTION
Seattle Public Utilities used this grant to acquire 3 properties (consisting of five tax parcels) protecting 3.19 acres of riparian habitat and 260 lft along the Royal Arch Reach of the Lower Cedar River. The acquired properties are contiguous and 4 of the 5 parcels are river-front properties, all located downstream of Royal Arch Park. All residential structures were demolished and over time the properties will be restored to full riparian function furthering the long-term goal of improving habitat for Chinook salmon. While SPU was unsuccessful in negotiating with the Masons for acquisition of the Royal Arch Park property, the acquired parcels represent significant progress toward enabling an eventual levee removal and Cedar River floodplain reconnection project that could move forward once the Masons property is acquired. Until then, SPU is working with Forterra and the Friends of the Cedar River Watershed to remove invasive weeds and cultivate a native riparian forest. The difference between the proposed and final metrics was the result of how the sponsor incorrectly identified how many acres they expected to purchase. RCO grant manager informed sponsor of their error and they will change the way they are reporting proposed acres in the future.
