DESCRIPTION
Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC) will protect high quality nearshore habitat and design restoration of an entire historic barrier lagoon in Filucy Bay on the Key Peninsula, Pierce County. The project will protect through fee-simple acquisition ~ 12 acres of land and 1,400 feet of shoreline highly threatened by development. The project builds on GPC’s successful protection of almost a mile of high quality shoreline in Filucy Bay, a high regional and local priority for protection and one of the most intact and high-functioning coastal inlets in South Puget Sound. It is important rearing habitat for multiple species of salmon, including Endangered Species Act-listed Chinook salmon (particularly for the nearby Nisqually stock) and steelhead, as well as summer and fall-run chum, coho salmon, and cutthroat trout. As part of this project, GPC will complete final restoration designs for the historic barrier lagoon that was filled in several decades ago. The feasibility study will explore and design how to restore the barrier lagoon, recreate tidal flow, and reestablish salt marsh vegetation to enhance habitat and shoreline function of the property.
