DESCRIPTION
Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC) has worked for over a decade to protect the north cove of Filucy Bay, located on the Key Peninsula, Pierce County. The project area is a high regional and local priority for protection as it is one of the most intact and high-functioning coastal inlets in South Puget Sound, and a popular kayak destination. It is important rearing habitat for multiple species of salmon, including Endangered Species Act-listed Chinook salmon (Nisqually juvenile in particular) and steelhead, as well as summer and fall-run chum, coho salmon and cutthroat trout. Nearly 3/4 of a mile of shoreline has been protected, largely by previous ESRP (16-2134) and Salmon Recovery (14-1946) investments. The current phase built upon, and further protected, these investments by acquiring four of the last remaining undeveloped and highly threatened parcels in the project area. These four parcels expanded the conservation footprint on the western shore of the bay. Working with willing landowners, GPC protected over 20 acres of coastal inlet estuary and more than 750 feet of shoreline. Additionally, this project restored 5.8 acres of riparian habitat by removing noxious weeds and installing nearly 3,000 native plants.
