DESCRIPTION
Great Peninsula Conservancy acquired a 21-acre shoreline parcel on the north cove estuary of Filucy Bay, on the southeastern portion of the Key Peninsula. The parcel features 620 feet of shoreline on the estuary. It comprises intact, high-value estuarine nearshore, salt marsh, shoreline, and riparian forest habitat on an estuary cited as a priority for protection in both regional and local shoreline habitat assessments. The parcel was under a high risk of residential development. This estuary property provides vital habitat to ESA-listed fish species, including Puget Sound Chinook and winter steelhead. The 21-acre acquisition parcel also abuts a 46-acre parcel recently acquired by Great Peninsula Conservancy that protects 1,350 feet of shoreline on the opposite shore of the cove. The addition of this 21-acre acquisition creates a substantial block of preserved habitat.
