Great Peninsula Conservancy (GPC) acquired approximately 19.5 acres (fee-simple) of coastal inlet estuary and riparian habitat on North Cove at the head of Filucy Bay on Key Peninsula, Pierce County. This included approximately 700 feet of estuarine shoreline that is a high regional and local protection priority and is in near-reference condition. These nearshore lands benefit multiple species of salmon, including ESA-listed Chinook and steelhead, as well as summer and fall-run chum, coho, and cutthroat. This project builds upon other nearby conservation lands protected by GPC under a waiver of retroactivity. It is part of a larger scale conservation initiative to protect the entire North Cove estuary of Filucy Bay that will ensure intact shoreline, estuary and stream channel processes, providing critical rearing, refuge, transitional, and migratory fish habitat. The West Sound Lead Entity strategy and South Sound Chapter of the Puget Sound Salmon Recovery Plan place a high priority on the protection of highly-functional nearshore that includes intact intertidal areas, saltwater marshes and estuaries with older second-growth riparian forests. The Key Peninsula, Gig Harbor, and Islands Watershed Nearshore Salmon Habitat Assessment (Pentec 2003) ranked the habitat quality of priority properties in this multi-site acquisition project within the top 3% out of the entire study area. The area is also identified as regionally significant in the 2012 Puget Sound Nearshore Ecosystem Restoration Project Strategy Plan. The PCSRF 2015 project funds were spent within the contract period.
