DESCRIPTION
This project was conceptual from the WRIA 15 KGI Report (2011) and has now become an active project.
This potential project is located on the eastern side of Filucy Bay near a small embayment and perennial stream. There is also a patch of low gradient, high elevation saltmarsh habitat present. This project was identified by the 'Strategic Identification of Areas and Projects for Nearshore Restoration throughout Key Peninsula-Gig Harbor-Islands Watershed, WRIA 15, Washington' report prepared by the South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group. It was also identified and targeted as one of six near-term restoration projects, and developed with detailed pre-project plans including 30% engineering designs.
Projects sponsors will work with two landowners to remove a mile long wooden pile and rip rap bulkhead near the mouth of perennial stream. Removal of the bulkhead will include installation of woody structure to tie into adjacent back beach and salt marsh habitat. The proposed enhancement would remove the entire length of the two bulkheads (225 feet) and fill material landward of the bulkhead. The upper beach and back beach profile would be restored to mitigate the beach-face erosion and enlarge the area suitable for salt marsh recolonization. The site presents a very good opportunity for coastal restoration due to low wave energy, low rate of sediment transport and low erosion potential.
A feasibility and assessment study of the bulkhead removal and beach enhancement has been prepared by Coastal Geologic Services Inc. (June 2010).
