DESCRIPTION
Dry Creek originates in the mixed rangeland of on the western flanks of the Blue Mountains of SE Washington and terminates in the Walla Walla River at the town of Lowden, WA. The creek is designated as a Minor Spawning Area mSA for steelhead and encompasses the watershed from the confluence with the Walla Walla River up into the top of the drainage. The creek has a priority protection designation from the town of Dixie up river into the headwaters. The creek supports populations of wild Mid-Columbia River ESU Steelhead though the total number of spawners has not been documented immature fish have been observed.
Dry Creek has undergone habitat degradation from the removal of riparian trees, elevated water temperature, channel straightening, excess fine sediments and floodplain confinement and as a result much of the lower stream has become insized as much as 20ft in some locations. Limiting factors in Dry Creek are not specificly identified in the Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan, however actions to protect existing condition are recomended including maintain and improve riparian function, fine sediment, flows, and high summer temperature. Protection involves maintenance of existing condition, and the promotion of passive restoration to allow natural healing of habitat. Habitat actions implemented in this watershed include removal of imminent threats including removal of barriers and the placement of fish screens.
