DESCRIPTION
The Skagit Floodplain Riparian Project represents a major effort to restore vegetation communities and floodplain function in the Skagit River floodplain. The Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group (SFEG) worked with three partner landowners who own conservation properties in the floodplain, including the U.S. Forest Service, Seattle City Light (SCL), and the Skagit Land Trust. The project has involved planting and maintaining riparian vegetation on 10 worksites along the Skagit and Sauk Rivers. SFEG has been assisted in these efforts by contract crews from Whatcom County Department of Corrections and the Washington Conservation Corps. Native trees and shrubs were installed on 74 acres as a result of this project. Invasive plants were controlled on over 134 acres of floodplain land. Eleven log jams were installed in low lying areas of the Ovenell site in 2008 to trap debris and dissipate energy during overbank flows, and to enhance shoreline habitat when the river occupies these floodplain channels in the future. Volunteer participation represented a major contribution to these efforts. Over the 3.5 year grant period SFEG hosted 19 work parties for school and community volunteer groups. Volunteers contributed almost 1300 hours to the project.
