DESCRIPTION
The Skagit River Floodplain Riparian Project restored native floodplain forest vegetation on six sites owned by 3 organizations (USFS, SCL and Skagit County Parks). The goal of the project was to improve floodplain habitat on properties permanently protected for conservation purposes in the Upper and Middle Skagit Floodplain areas. In total almost 16,000 native trees and shrubs were installed to restore approximately 80 acres of floodplain. SFEG staff also maintained planted areas by annually treating invasive weeds (reed canary grass, blackberry, scotch broom and knotweed.) with herbicide and mowing/weedwhacking around plants to optimize growth. Most sites received at least 3 years of post-planting maintenance. SFEG plans to continue maintenance on the Ovenell, Marblemount Boat Launch and Ross Island properties through 2013 using WCC Crews. Ongoing Maintenance efforts will be supported by landowners and the Washington Department of Natural Resources. Other small restoration actions implemented on these properties included removing fill where former access roads cross swales and draws in order to reestablish floodplain connectivity, repairing banks damaged by ORVs, and placing barriers to block ATV use.
