DESCRIPTION
Skagit Land Trust (SLT), The Nature Conservancy (TNC) and Seattle City Light (SCL), in partnership with the Sauk-Suiattle Tribe, continued their effective collaboration to protect high quality Chinook habitat in the Skagit River system. The project area included the floodplain of the Skagit and its major tributaries upstream of Sedro-Woolley. Targeted parcels included the Dashiell, Petrich, Klaasen, and Pressentine tracts. Additional parcels include those identified in 1) SLT's 2000 Middle Skagit Assessment; 2) TNC's 2003 Upper Skagit Assessment; and 3) TNC's forthcoming Sauk River Assessment; as well as 4) properties overlooked in the reach level assessments but that qualify for protection using the methods established in those assessments. Properties identified as a priority for acquisition through the new SWC Middle Skagit Assessment were also considered for purchase. Work involved: evaluation ('ranking') of individual properties as needed (SWC); landowner outreach; site inspection; appraisals and typical due diligence associated with land acquisition. SWC's Protection Committee served as project advisory committee. The long term ownership of the identified properties were decided on a case by case basis depending on which partner was best situated to steward the property. Restoration needs were evaluated per property and partners and new funding secured as necessary. The grant resulted in the acquisition of 12 high ranking properties, protecting 252.2 acres.
