DESCRIPTION
King County used this grant to purchase a conservation easement over 31.38 acres of the “back nine” of the Wayne Golf Course in Bothell, WA. The undeveloped property is located on the left bank of the Sammamish River, approximately 2.5 river miles upstream from Lake Washington. Park visitors come to enjoy the open space and walk along the river which is an important migratory corridor for Chinook salmon, as well as Lake Sammamish kokanee, Coho, and sockeye salmon. The City of Bothell owns the underlying fee interest. The property includes a 10.83-acre Riparian Protection Area, a 2.5-acre Wetland Protection Area, a 18.05-acre forested Upland Protection Area, approximately 1000 lineal feet of shoreline along the south bank of the river, and the lower 1,200 lineal feet of Waynita Creek which flows through the site to its confluence with the Sammamish. The purpose of the conservation easement is to protect the property as open space and offer opportunities for ecological enhancement including riparian restoration, to benefit fish and wildlife species (specifically Chinook salmon listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act). Other reasons for protecting the property include the design, construction, and maintenance of trail connections to the Burke-Gillman and Sammamish River Trails. The property possesses natural, open space, ecological, scenic, recreational, and educational values that are of great importance to the community. Preservation of the property will ensure that it is retained forever as a natural, open space and in scenic condition. The goal is to prevent any use that will impair or interfere with the habitat. The Protected Property may not be developed (with the exception of trails and trail amenities), subdivided, used for active recreation, or harvested for timber; also, the wetlands may not be disturbed. This is a part of a larger multiple-benefit project, to include creation of a city park and natural area. The county and the city worked together to permanently protect the entire 89-acre golf course. The city will maintain and steward the property to manage the site for public use consistent with the easement requirements. The property is identified in the Lake Washington/Cedar/Sammamish Watershed Chinook Salmon Conservation Plan 10-Year Update as a site for floodplain restoration, riparian restoration, and enhancement of Waynita Creek (especially the confluence with the Sammamish).
