DESCRIPTION
The Nisqually Land Trust, South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group, Nisqually Indian Tribe and other partners completed the third phase of landscape-scale ecosystem recovery of the Ohop Creek Valley, with a primary focus on restoring wetlands, floodplain function, and riparian forest re-establishment to benefit ESA listed salmonids. Additionally, 5 acres of riparian and floodplain habitat at the Ohop Phase I & II worksites were improved with additional tree plantings. Located near Eatonville in Pierce County, Ohop Creek is a primary tributary to the Nisqually River, and an important refuge for threatened Chinook salmon and Steelhead trout within the Puget Sound ESU. The earlier project phases (completed in 2011), and this current Phase III project are discrete projects that support the broader recovery effort for the Ohop Valley, a priority restoration initiative for salmon recovery for the Nisqually Basin and Puget Sound. The Phase III project scope included re-alignment of a 1.4 mile section of Ohop Creek, placement of several large wood habitat structures, and riparian planting. The project site connects with the upstream Phases to provide over 2 miles of restored habitat for listed salmon species and improved functions for the stream and the associated floodplain and wetlands. In-stream construction was completed in 2015, with additional riparian planting continuing through spring 2017. Primary salmonid species benefiting from this project are Chinook, coho, and pink salmon, and steelhead, rainbow, and cutthroat trout.
