DESCRIPTION
Nisqually Land Trust used this grant to acquire (for permanent protection) approximately 121 acres in the lower Ohop Valley. These acquisitions significantly expanded protection of the lower reach of Ohop Creek and the full width of the floodplain along this reach. The acquisition of the Burwash property (110 undeveloped floodplain acres) made it possible to proceed with phase III of the Ohop Creek channel realignment and floodplain restoration (project 13-1144: Lower Ohop Restoration Phase III; South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group), and to permanently protect the bluffs and forest adjacent to the Ohop Creek floodplain. In addition, the project lead to the protection of the historically-significant Burwash farmstead, which is now owned by Eatonville School District and will be managed in support of a visionary, Science-Technology-Engineering and Math (STEM) program by the District. The acquisition of the Martin property (11 acres) made it possible to expand the floodplain restoration adjacent to the earlier phases of the channel realignment and floodplain restoration (projects 05-1503 & 07-1908: Lower Ohop Creek Restoration Phase I and Phase II; South Puget Sound Salmon Enhancement Group). The earlier phases of the Lower Ohop Creek Restoration occurred on land trust property and restored more than 100 acres of riverbank and wetland and recreated more than 1 mile of stream channel. As a part of the Martin acquisition, floodplain restoration included demolition of structures, removal of invasive weeds, and installation and maintenance of native, woody vegetation. Additionally the project completed demolition of farmyard structures and infrastructure immediately adjacent to the floodplain restoration on the Grauwen property, which was purchased under an earlier phase of the Ohop Valley project (00-1859). The project agreement was initially funded by the SRFB on 12/8/2011 with $361,553 of 2011 Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Funds (PCSRF) and $38,447 of Puget Sound Acquisition and Restoration funds (PSAR). After acquisition, the land trust learned they needed additional funds to cover cultural resources consultation associated with the historic farmstead, and demolition costs associated with other Ohop valley acquisitions. Early in 2013, $200,000 of PCSRF funding awarded by SRFB on Dec 6, 2012 to the Lower Ohop Creek Acquisition and Restoration Project (12-1369) and $160,000 of 11-13 PSAR funding returned from the Litzenberger project (11-1530) was amended in to the agreement. The sponsor match totaled $305,295 to bring the project cost to $1,065,295. All costs paid for with federal grant funding was incurred during the applicable grant period. The $140,000 of PCSRF 2009 funds were incurred between 2012 and June 2014. The PCSRF 2011 funds were incurred between December 2011 and May 2016.
