DESCRIPTION
Nisqually Land Trust proposes to acquire and restore an 11-acre property in lower Ohop Valley near Eatonville in Pierce County. The project will increase Ohop Creek floodplain restoration and enhance the riparian buffer along the west side of the recently restored section of Ohop Creek. The property will be added to NLT’s adjacent 400+ acre ownership. Ohop Creek has been designated in the Nisqually Chinook Recovery Plan as one of the two most important tributaries in the Nisqually watershed for restoration of salmon habitat. This acquisition will eliminate a series of historical uses / threats on the property that have been detrimental to adjacent restoration efforts, including trespass that has damaged and trampled plantings, runoff of manure and sediment, and hydrologic modifications from soil compaction. As part of this proposal, the old pasture land will be reconnected with the hydrology of Ohop Creek and re-vegetated. NLT will remove the existing infrastructure and structures and plant native trees and shrubs througout the property. This acquisition will protect habitat for Chinook, steelhead, coho, cutthroat and chum salmon.
