DESCRIPTION
This was an instream restoration project. The project sponsor was Kitsap County Dept. of Community Development and the project partner and property owner was the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. Chico Creek, which flows to Dyes Inlet in Kitsap County, is a high priority stream for salmonid protection and restoration. The stream channel is located in the lower mile of the creek, and is a priority location in the Chico Creek Mainstem Restoration Plan (2004). The project reach had been channelized and disconnected from its historic floodplain. The riparian vegetation within the project area consisted mainly of deciduous tree species with inadequate understory vegetation and was non-existent within the golf course segment. This project was originally funded to restore the entire stretch of Chico Creek through the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. As the design for the restoration progressed, new cost estimates were too high for the original SRFB grant so the project construction was broken into 2 phases. This portion of the restoration was completed in 2008. The other projects funded by the SRFB that completed this are #08-1639, 09-1672, and 10-1879. This part of the project extended the stream length from approximately 500 linear feet to 560 feet, and connected approx. 320 feet of pond area to the stream channel. The stream banks were extended and sloped 35-40 feet beyond the original top of bank to add floodplain. 550 feet of armoring on right and left banks were removed. Channel meanders were provided and added to stream length. Six grade control stuctures and five lunker structures were installed with bendway weirs. These structures were installed to reduce slope and provide grade control as well and habitat, forage area and refuge. These structures upon completion consisted of over 130 large wood pieces. The size range of the wood ranged from 20-80 feet, 18-36 inches in diameter with over 60 pieces of rootwads. An 89 ft. long railcar bridge replaced a smaller one to span the expanded floodplain. Over 3000 native plants were installed and are being maintained by golf course staff.
