DESCRIPTION

Kitsap County Dept. of Community Development partnered with Kitsap Golf and Country Club (property owner) on the restoration project located in the lower mile of Chico Creek, which flows to Dyes Inlet in Kitsap County. The restoration project: · Extended the stream length from approximately 560 linear feet to 600 feet, · Constructed two new side channels adding approx. 400 feet of side channel adjacent to the main channel. · Reconnected the creek to its floodplain by extending the stream banks to slope 35-40 feet beyond the original top of bank. · Removed 200 feet of armoring on right and left banks. · Replaced the old log weirs. · Provided Channel meanders to lengthen the stream. · Replaced an undersized pedestrian stream crossing that was a barrier to fish passage, with a 97 ft. long clear span roscoe pedestrian bridge · Installed 3000 native plants that are being maintained by golf course staff. · Installed over 120 large wood pieces ranging in size from 10-80 feet, 10-36 inches in diameter with over 20 pieces of root wads. Chico Creek is a high priority stream for salmonid protection and restoration and this location was prioritized in the Chico Creek Mainstem Restoration Plan (2004). The project reach had been channelized and disconnected from its historic floodplain with a significantly impaired riparian buffer. There was originally one project (#04-1209) funded to restore the entire stretch of Chico Creek through the Kitsap Golf and Country Club. As the design for that project progressed, new cost estimates were too high for the original SRFB grant so the project construction was broken into 2 phases. This portion of the restoration is phase 2, and the primary construction was completed in 2010. Some additional construction occurred in 2011: some adjustment of structure placement after flooding in winter 2010, and final repairs to the golf course itself associated with the restoration project (tree removal and storage areas, golf cart paths). The other projects funded by the SRFB that are associated with this restoration are #08-1639, and 10-1879.
