DESCRIPTION
Eleven derelict fishing nets were removed from marine habitats of WRIA2 to 105' depth. Removal operations were conducted off of Lopez Island and at Salmon Bank. 0.91 acres of marine low-releif and high-relief rocky habiatt were restored by removing these nets. Locations of removed derleict nets are shown on the attached map (attachment #16). Removing these nets has eliminated a direct source of mortality for adult salmon, rockfish and other marine animals. Using an established catch rate model, we estimate these nets were entangling 26 birds, 143 fish, and more than 12,000 invertebrates every year they remained derelict. Including those removed during this project, a total of 1,732 derelict fishing nets have been removed from WRIA2 by the Northwest Straits Initiative. Currently there remain 153 known net targets to be removed.
