DESCRIPTION
232 derelict fishing nets were removed from marine habitats of WRIA2 to 105’ of depth. Nets wee located throughout the WRIA with concentrations at Hein Bank, Salmon Bank, and along the West side of San Juan Island. Removal operations were conducted in salmon migratory pathways at known net locations. As of March 31, 2011, approximately 190 derelict nets were known to exist in WRIA2. This project removed those known remaining nets from WRIA2. Subsequent sidescan surveys found 505 additiaonl net targets, of which 42 were removed. Removed nets were degrading 46.3 acres of marine habitat and entangling more than 1,579 birds, 6,147 fish and 540,439 invertebrates every year. This project eliminated a direct source of mortality for adult salmon, rockfish and other marine animals and restored 46.3 acres of marine habitat important to salmon and rockfish for migration, rearing, feeding, refuge, and vital trophic energy exchange.
