DESCRIPTION
The Northwest Straits Marine Conservation Foundation used this funding to carry out twenty-five derelict fishing gear removal days. Removals were conducted in marine waters off of San Juan Island and Lopez Island. In total, 101 derelict gillnets, 4 purse seines, 2 crab pots, and 1 crab ring were removed. Of these, 25 gillnets were removed off of Lopez Island, and 76 were removed off of San Juan Island. Gillnets measured 20.7 acres and were found on a variety of marine habitats, including high rocky relief, low rocky relief, and mud, sand, and boulder habitats. Of the removed gillnets, 77%were still actively fishing. In the derelict gear, we found 4,927 animals entangled, including 1 dead harbor seal, 54 dead marine birds, and 47 fish. Sixty-four separate marine species were identified, including 8 different species of birds.
