DESCRIPTION
This North Olympic Land Trust project is located on the Pysht River in Clallam County. The project permanently protects Pysht River floodplain and channel migration zone (CMZ) in the same reach of the Pysht as Phase I, approved in Grant Round 10 (Project # 09-1528). Phase II builds upon that acquisition and protects 105.54 additional acres of land in that area. Phase II was completed October 9th, 2012 with conservation of the second property (Burdick) complete. Phase II has resulted in approximately 0.8 miles of the Pysht being conserved, and an additional 0.8 miles of tributaries (Green Creek, Hamerquist Creek, T2, etc) being permanently protected. River miles 6.6-7.5 and 9.15-9.4 was conserved with this grant. Three designated wetlands were conserved, as well as 2.01 acres of valuable off-channel habitat, 6.06 acres of riparian habitat and 27.93 acres of floodplain habitat. This is an overall summary of Phase II's accomolishments. In the following two paragraphs, are details on the individual worksites, and the habitat values, acres, and stream feet contained within those properties. 68.2 acres is protected with a conservation easement that protects 0.495 miles of Pysht River, 0.539 miles of Hamerquist Creek and a number of other tributaries to the Pysht River. This Property has a high variety of habitat for salmonids including 2.01 acres of valuable off-channel habitat, 6.06 acres of riparian habitat and 27.93 acres of floodplain habitat. 37.34 acres was purchased fee simple by the Land Trust from the VanCalcars and is now part of the Pysht Conservation Area, managed for public access. The property is separated by one 9.5-acre parcel, privately owned, from the acquisition accomplished with Phase I (Project # 09-1528). The Pysht River flows through the Van Calcar parcel, with approximately 1,200 feet of river frontage (0.227 miles). Also located on the property is the confluence of the Pysht River and Green Creek, with 1,500 feet of Green Creek (0.284 miles) running through the parcel. There are three designated wetlands on the parcel as well. The vegetation is primarily second growth forest, with one recently logged area approximately 9 acres in size, which has been revegetated. There are no structures on the parcel. This project is needed because (a) the properties occupy floodplain and channel migration zone (CMZ); and (b) conservation easements and acquisition by a local land trust are the only way to guarantee habitat protection in perpetuity and (c) these properties contain critical spawning habitat. This project also ensures the protection of mature forest that provides substantial canopy cover to these "high use" spawning reaches for numerous salmon species. This property is vital for the recovering productivity of chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), and chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta). The mainstem and tributaries of the Pysht River support nine species of freshwater fish: five species of salmonids and four species of non-salmonids. Salmonids present include: chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha), coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta), coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki), and steelhead/rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).
