DESCRIPTION
In this grant round, NOLT implemented Phase III, protecting additional floodplain and riparian habitat along the Pysht River between the estuary and River Mile 9.9. This project included acquisition. NOLT acquired, fee-simple, a 9.5-acre in-holding of our Pysht Conservation Area. This acquisition was funded by this grant, with match provided by the Makah Tribe and Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe. Phase I and II were completed prior to this grant application, and NOLT acquired 58-acres fee simple and 68 acres through conservation easement. With Phase III complete, North Olympic Land Trust now owns 74 acres fee-simple and nearly 3/4 of a mile of the Pysht. The mainstem and tributaries of the Pysht River support the following salmonids: chinook, coho, chum, coastal cutthroat trout, and steelhead/rainbow trout. All of that land is currently open to the public for passive recreation. This property is located on the Pysht River, between RM 9.05 and 9.17, and includes floodplain & channel migration zone. There was a mobile home and accessory structures on the bank of the river, which were removed, and noxious and invasive species will be managed by the CREP program starting in 2017. Additionally,Engineered Log Jams (ELJs) have been designed for this area and implementation is in progress.
