DESCRIPTION
The Bridge to Bridge restoration project is located on WDFW property on the Walla Walla River below McDonald Bridge. The first phase of this project was to complete a reach assessment of the two miles downstream from McDonald Bridge, select a project and complete a 30% design for nearly two miles of the Walla Walla River. This part of the project was completed in 2009 and lead to a 30% conceptual design report for the the project reach which included a set-back levee. In 2010 the Steelheaders received funding to complete a final design for the upper third of the two-mile reach, including a decision on set back or removal, and LWD associated with anticipated movement of the river. The final design was completed in 2011 and provided construction cost estimates to be used for construction funding requests to remove the river levee located on the upper 3/4 mile. Funding was provided to complete implementation in the 12th grant round with work to beginning in 2013. Ultimately, confinement, floodplain isolation, and degraded instream and riparian conditions will be improved on this section of the Walla Walla River, which is identified by The Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan as a priority restoration reach in the Walla Walla mainstem MSA. Adult and juvenile summer steelhead and spring chinook use the project reach during their migrations. Other species of cultural value and state concern that utilize the project reach are margined sculpin, leopard dace, and river lamprey.
