DESCRIPTION
Tri-State Steelheaders Inc. used this grant to complete final designs for restoration projects on the upper third of a 2-mile reach of the Walla Walla River. The Bridge to Bridge Restoration Design (08-2028), completed in 2010 provided 30% plans for nearly two miles of the Walla Walla River. As part of the 30% design, the set-back or removal of a levee on WDFW property below McDonald Bridge was proposed. This project completed final designs for the upper third of the two mile reach, from approximately river mile 28.4 to 29, immediately downstream of McDonald Road. The final design includes removal of the levee and large woody structures to improve instream habitat with anticipated movement of the river. A construction cost estimate was also prepared to be used for construction funding requests.
Ultimately, confinement, floodplain isolation, and degraded instream and riparian conditions will be improved on this section of the Walla Walla River, which is identified by The Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan as a priority restoration reach in the Walla Walla mainstem MSA. Adult and juvenile summer steelhead and spring Chinook use the project reach during their migrations. Other species of cultural value and state concern that utilize the project reach are margined sculpin, leopard dace, and river lamprey.
