DESCRIPTION
The CTUIR proposes to implement habitat enhancement and adaptive management strategies on the North Touchet River from RM 1.3 – 4.3. This is the fourth phase of an ongoing habitat restoration project. The primary goals of the first 3 phases were to increase channel complexity and floodplain connectivity while improving fish habitat on the North Touchet River. This grant application seeks funding to implement additional enhancement and adaptive management strategies where needed on all 3 miles of the project area.
The work included in the fourth phase primarily addresses adaptive management on the previous three years work and to add large wood structures where they would be beneficial to the overall goals of the original project. Similarly, we need to assess our planting effort over the last three years and replant where appropriate as part of an adaptive management plan. For example, our planting efforts at Phase 1 RM 3.3-4.3 took a significant hit during the February 2020 floods. We anticipate additional loss at RM 1.3-2.0 (Phase 2) which was finished planting in the fall of 2020. We have yet to plant the
planned floodplain reconnection at RM 2.0-3.3 (Phase 3). However, since all three phases of the restoration effort released the North Touchet from a highly constricted channel to a more "free flowing" river system, we anticipate that the floodplain planting will need to be reevaluated and enhanced in 2021.
