This project was to created more habitat complexity in the Walla Walla River east of the town of Touchet, in Walla Walla County WA. This project was Phase 2 of 4 from designs developed in 2016. Limiting factors for the 0.6 mile reach were addressed by placing logs and log structures to improve channel complexity, maintain pools, create off-channel areas, and encourage side channels.Twenty-six log structures were built, utilizing 165 logs and logs with rootwads. Cottonwood cuttings were planted to increase future shading and improve riparian function. This section of the Walla Walla River is identified by The Snake River Salmon Recovery Plan as a priority restoration reach in the Walla Walla mainstem major spawning area. Adult and juvenile summer steelhead and spring Chinook use the project reach during their migrations, and Bull Trout occur there seasonally. Other species of cultural value and state concern that utilize the project reach are Margined Sculpin, Leopard Dace, and River Lamprey. Project costs were lower than originally estimated because, before the original projects designs could be implemented the rive avulsed. This resulted in a significant change to the active channel and out-of date designs. The new channel alignment forced the sponsor to redesign the restoration. In doing so, a more low-tech approach was used, whereby the sponsor, with the help of WA Department of Fish and Wildlife, used an in situ approach to decide the best placement and size of structures. Less equipment and lightly engineered structures had lower installation costs than the original designs The avulsion also resulted in the abandonment of the river bend where the sponsor had originally expected to implement streambank stablization actions, so this work was not implemented as part of the final project outcomes.
