This project was the sixth and final phase in a project that removed or modified a privately-owned, failing paved haul road from the active floodplain of the Klickitat River to restore natural hydrologic processes in an otherwise fully functional reach of the river. Phase 6 specifically addressed an approximately 3-mile reach of road between Dead Canyon bridge and the upper end of the natural washout downstream. Work included fill removal, fill pullback, bedrock reconnection, culvert removal, riprap removal, road ripping, native plant installation, weed control (on all phases) and managing public expectations and impacts. This portion of river has the greatest habitat complexity of any reach in the lower Klickitat River and provides critical spawning, migration and rearing habitat for winter and summer steelhead (ESA-Threatened), spring and fall Chinook salmon, and coho salmon. The project addressed limiting habitat features and processes identified in the 2013 Klickitat Lead Entity Salmon Recovery Strategy for this reach by fill removal and pullback of floodplain road to restore connectivity, establish river contact with bedrock, and soften channel boundary along 3.27 miles of road.
