DESCRIPTION
The Harrison Side Channel Project was completed by the Chelan County Natural Resources Department (CCNRD) in summer 2008. The Harrison project area is located between river mile 3.7 and 4.2 adjacent to the Entiat River. This river left side channel was cut off from all main channel flows less than a 100 year event through the historic practices of levee building. This project reconnected the relict side channel and floodplain area by removing part of an existing levee, excavating a portion of the middle side channel to ensure perennial flow connection to the main channel, adding large woody debris to the excavated portion of the middle side channel to improve habitat complexity and adding an instream structure to the mainstem Entiat River to redirect the thalweg toward the side channels to provide perennial flow. The levee removal allows connectivity between the mainstem Entiat R. and relic side channels, re-establishing a remnant floodplain. This project was designed to restore floodplain function and increase juvenile salmon and steelhead rearing and steelhead spawning habitat. Hydraulic modeling completed for the 2008 design indicated that sufficient flow would pass through the inlet into the historic oxbow to pass fine sediment and maintain side channel function over time through periodic flushing. The two-dimensional hydraulic model terrain included a small ridge along the right bank of the side channel inlet.
