DESCRIPTION
Through partnering with event co-hosts the City of Entiat and Entiat Watershed Planning Unit, Cascadia has successfully planned and implemented the Entiat River Community Cleanup Campaign in the summers of 2010 and 2011. During the course of the 2 year campaign a broad audience has been reached through a number of outreach tools; over 30,000 Chelan County residents, 1000 Entiat households have been engaged indirectly through newsletters, local media publications, and radio broadcasts, and over 300 Entiat residents have been engaged directly through community events, service groups, and the Entiat school system. The success of the community based campaign includes over 60 people participation the first stream cleanup held on August 28, 2010 that produced nearly 3 tons of debris from the Entiat River. The second event was held on Saturday, August 6. 2011, with over 100 volunteers from the Entiat area and elsewhere filling two 20-yard roll-off bins with metal, trash, and noxious weeds removed from the banks of Entiat River. Volunteers at the Entiat National Fish Hatchery also planted 100 native trees and shrubs., of which the first 50 participants planted a 'legacy tree', a single Ponderosa Pine. These 'legacy trees' were mapped by GPS and when funding allows receive a name plaque so that participants can watch them grow and change with time.
