DESCRIPTION
This proposal examined the feasibility of restoring pocket estuary habitat for fry migrant Chinook salmon on the north end of Similk Bay. This project sought to improve connectivity between an historic salt marsh/lagoon complex currently isolated by a county road. The project conducted a feasibility study that examined the alternatives of removing the isolation road, modifying it, or bridging it. After conducting a coastal risk analysis stakeholders determined the bridging option was the most desirable option to which a preliminary design study was developed to evaluate design elements of this preferred approach to restoring a salt marsh complex and/or barrier lagoon. The Swinomish Tribe recently purchased the Similk Beach Golf Course and the adjacent beachfront parcels. This project site includes approximately 17 acres of wetland and approximately 2.5 acres of nearshore gravel beach to south of the county road.
