DESCRIPTION
The Similk Beach Estuary Restoration feasibility project has been examining this site of a historic coastal lagoon/pocket estuary marsh for potential restoration of tidal processes. Swinomish Tribal Community has secured ownership of the beach tidelands and uplands in the area of Similk Bay. Initial coastal engineering has been completed and shown the site to be suitable for restoration without increasing or transferring risk to adjacent landowners or existing land uses. However, the study did show that under existing conditions the surrounding beachfront community is at risk of higher rates of erosion in part due to the consequences of global warming. This proposal requests ESRP funds to help match exiting SRFB commitments to the project and to help build upon the design work currently underway such that we can explore techniques by which the effects of wind wave erosion can be reduced in conjunction with restoration actions being pursued on Swinomish lands within Similk Bay.
