DESCRIPTION
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) owns 264 acres of upland (Fir Island Farm) in the vicinity of Brown Slough, Dry Slough and Claude Davis Slough that is currently managed as a snow goose reserve. The feasibility study completed evaluated different altenatives to restore tidal processes, tidal marsh habitat and tidal channel habitat at the Fir Island Farm site. The different restoration alternatives evaluated by the feasibility study ranged from replacing existing tidegates with self regulating tidegates to varying degrees of relocating the existing tidegates and flood dikes to more landward configurations. The primary objective of the feasibility and design project was to maximize the juvenile Chinook salmon rearing habitat area. With the assistance of a technical advisory team composed of local partners and stakeholders, the different restoration alternatives for the Fir Island Farm site were evaluated and a prefered restoration alternative was selected. Snow geese management issues as well as public recreational uses of the site were considered in selecting a prefered restoration alternative. Public outreach also informed the selection a prefered restoration alternative. A 30% design was completed for the prefered restoration alternative. All of the restoration alternatives evaluated by the feasibility study ensure that the drainage capacity, flood protection and saltwater intrusion protection for the surrounding farms are maintained.
