DESCRIPTION
WDFW used this grant to implement the Fir Island Farm Final Design project. Fir Island Farm is located on Fir Island between the North Fork and South Fork Skagit River. The project built upon the Fir Island Farm Estuary Restoration Feasibility Study (2011) (09-1444) and performed the surveys, data collection, analyses, modeling and engineering necessary to complete 60%, 90%, final design and bid documents for restoring tidal flooding to approximately 125 acres of existing farmland. The grant was also used to secure the local, state and federal permits required to construct the project. The future restoration project (14-1022), totaling over $10 million, will significantly contribute to the recovery of Skagit Chinook salmon by restoring 125 acres of tidal marsh habitat, 5 acres of new tidal channel habitat and producing an estimated 65,000 Chinook smolts annually. The final project will maintain snow goose management, public access, and agriculture capabilities at the farm. Drainage and flood protection for the remaining farmland and neighboring farmland will also be maintained.
