DESCRIPTION
The Wiley Slough restoration project is located on the South Fork of the Skagit River, near Conway Washington. The entire project involves the removal of 6,500 ft of dike, 6 tidegates, and one culvert to restore tidal and riverine flooding to 155.95 acres of former tidelands. In addition to dike and tidgate removal the project had to re-install approximately one mile of new levee and reconstruct a new tidegate complex to provide for agricultural drainage. Now completed this project we believe will improve marsh habitat, will gain approximately 4.9 acres of tidal channel area and 7.3 miles of tidal channel, as the result of restored tidal and riverine flooding (this we cannot confirm w/o monitoring data-which is not currently being funded). There will also be off-site (downstream) increases in tidal channel area as a consequence of increased tidal prism. These changes along with the current site topography will allow recolonization of the site by native tidal marsh vegetation-primarily tidal sedge -and use of the tidal channel habitat by ESA-listed juvenile Chinook salmon, other juvenile salmon, and other native fish and wildlife. The Chinook recovery plan for the Skagit () estimates that 2,750 acres of tidal marsh restoration are required for Chinook recovery in the Skagit system. The Wiley Slough restoration site will account for 5.8% of this goal.
