DESCRIPTION
This project built upon a previously funded SRFB project to enhance instream channel conditions of Lower Day Creek through the installation of large log jams as an interim solution while the riparian area becomes reestablished and is once again able to provide logs of sufficient size to influence habitat conditions. Adding LWD improves channel conditions for salmonids by increasing the number and size of pools & can result in a net decrease in water temperature where pools intersect groundwater. The Day Creek watershed has long been recognized for its value to local salmon populations. Currently Lower Day Creek suffers from abnormally high water temperature during the summer months and is listed on the 303(d) list for temperature. The watershed has been altered by past forestry practices which removed hillside vegetation, built roads and took large woody debris out of the channel; creating unstable slopes, increasing sedimentation rates and raising water temperature. Timber operators are meeting new requirements set forth in Washington’s Forests and Fish Agreement that mandate increased buffers along fish bearing streams and upgrading or improving all forestry roads to reduce sediment inputs. Adding log jams as recommended in a 2006 Feasibility Study for Lower Day Creek improve sediment storage and transport in the stream channel, which will influence the shape of the channel bed, created holding and spawning areas for Chinook and help decrease temperature. The current grant increased the area of riparian forest that has been restored by adding three sites along the east bank of Day Creek (Blair, Swenson, and Robinson-Mahaffey). It also allowed us to continue maintenance at previously planted sites, bringing the total amount of riparian habitat that has been restored by this project to over 22 acres. At all sites blackberries were removed prior to planting native riparian trees. In addition to helping fund placement of 31 log structures in lower Day Creek we were able to install 6 additional log structures on the Johnson property near the inlet of a slough that feed water to Day Creek. After one highflow season these structures are already visibly increasing habitat complexity and the extent of clean spawning gravel.
