DESCRIPTION
Day Creek is a major tributary to the Wild and Scenic Skagit River. Historically, Lower Day Creek and its sloughs provided miles of excellent habitat for lower Skagit River salmon stocks. Day Creek, and Day Creek Slough in particular, were also known historically as superb steelhead streams. During the 1950’s a local fisherman published a book entitled “One Man’s Steelhead Shangri la” detailing the excellent habitat for steelhead in the Day Creek watershed. However, the last 100 years of human activity have altered the physical environment and natural processes that sustain this important habitat. Decades of intensive forestry activities in the Day Creek watershed, as well as other land use activities such as residential and agricultural development have reduced the quality of this habitat dramatically. High summer water temperature has been identified as a key factor in the degradation of habitat in Day Creek. In 2001, the Skagit Fisheries Enhancement Group partnered with the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest to conduct a feasibility study for the area. The Feasibility Study identified a range of restoration and protection actions that could be implemented to improve salmonid habitat. Subsequent grants were used to conduct extensive outreach, culminating in a series of presentations and field trips for Day Creek Community residents, and the publication of a booklet about the history of the Day Creek Community. While large scale restoration efforts are needed to restore abundant salmon populations to the Day Creek watershed, landowner cooperation is necessary in order for these large scale projects to occur. SFEG hosted a unique workshop series with a variety of partners in the Day Creek watershed in order to engage local landowners in learning more about the history of their watershed and instill a greater sense of stewardship for salmon resources. Cooperative landowners and educated community members worked to implement small scale restoration actions. Since 2008 SFEG has received three grants (one from the Department of Ecology and two from the Salmon Recovery Funding Board) to support restoration of 22 acres of riparian habitat, and to place 40-50 LWD (wood) structures in a 3 mile section of Lower Day Creek. Work funded by SRFB Project 08-1751 began in 2009, and resulted in the installation of more than 4,000 plants on 11.3 acres of land owned by 3 different landowners in the Day Creek Community. Hydraulic modeling to ensure that the proposed wood placement project does not exacerbate flooding or bank erosion was completed in September 2010. Construction of 31 log structures downstream of the South Skagit Highway Bridge was completed in 2011. SFEG also engaged the Day Creek community in education and restoration projects using matching funds provided by a grant from theWashington department of Ecology. We invited community members to participate in outreach events such as macroinvertebrate sampling, volunteer planting parties, and presentations on habitat processes, fish use and the LWD project. .
