DESCRIPTION
The Lower Day Creek Slough habitat enhancement improved a farm access road that blocked fish passage within a slough that drains to Ross Island Slough. Five small culverts and approximately 1000cy of fill were removed and replaced with a 60-foot railcar bridge. The slough provides access to over a mile of high quality rearing habitat for Chinook salmon, steelhead trout, and other anadromous fish species. The project also included planting approximately 20 acres of floodplain habitat adjacent to the slough and mainstem Skagit River. The SRFB grant provided funding for 10 acres of planting, invasive species removal, bridge design work, and the purchase of a bridge. Matching funds for bridge construction and an additional 10 acres of planting were provided by Puget Sound Energy. These projects were first identified as part of our SRFB funded Day Creek Feasibility Study (SRFB 01-1386). SFEG has been working with landowners to complete projects identified in that study since 2005. The proposed project contributes to floodplain restoration activities within the Ross Island Reach of the Middle Skagit River, which is a Tier 1 target area under the Skagit Watershed Councils 2010 Strategic Approach. The project also sets the stage for future upstream barrier removal efforts.
