DESCRIPTION

The proposed project was developed through the implementation of Snohomish County's Operations and Adaptive Management Plan for the North Meander Channel Reconnection Project-Stillaguamish River. This plan was developed to monitor and provide a framework for future management activities such as sediment removal, erosion control, vegetation management, and large woody material (LWM) augmentation. The project would provide a baseline mapping effort to characterize the existing conditions of channel to compare with previous efforts. Channel profile, existing LWM locations and condition, access, and potential LWM placement locations would be documented. We estimate that 3 to 7 potential LWM placement locations would be identified each containing 10 to 20 wood elements. Based on the baseline mapping effort we would develop designs for anchored LWM placement. These designs would include interwoven logs and logs with rootwads either ballasted with boulders or fastened with mechanical anchors. The intent of the design is to provide general layout of individual structures while providing the maximum flexibility of field fitting individual structures. The designs would contain woody elements and rootwads that engage water at all flow conditions. Such designs maximize the habitat value for each structure. In addition, the baseline mapping effort would provide guidance for sediment maintenance identified in the Adaptive Management Plan.
