King County Water and Land Resources restored a dynamic mosaic of riverine and floodplain habitats along 0.49 miles of the Middle Green River (at RM 34) off SE Green Valley Road approximately 2 miles east of the City of Auburn. This grant funded construction of two habitat elements: a backwater channel (1,000 lineal feet), and large wood habitat jams throughout the floodplain, river, and side channel. The larger Porter Levee Setback project also included the following elements (which were funded outside of this project agreement, and are therefore not included in the project metrics): • Removed 900 feet of the Porter levee to enhance connectivity to 52 acres of floodplain • Planted native trees and shrubs • Construct a setback facility to protect a King County road The levee, constructed in 1961 had a near vertical bank, confined the river channel, and prevented habitat-forming processes in the floodplain. Removing a portion of the levee restored river migration across the floodplain and significantly improved spawning, rearing, and refuge habitat for Chinook, Steelhead, and other salmonid species throughout this reach. This project was identified as a priority because it greatly enhanced off-river habitat for Chinook and steelhead in an area not previously used by these fish species because the levee restricted riverine-floodplain interaction.
