DESCRIPTION
Removing the Porter training levee would improve spawning, rearing, and refuge habitat for Chinook and steelhead throughout the existing floodplain of the Middle Green River. This project would reconnect 45 acres of floodplain to the flow pattern of the river. Large woody debris placement and riparian planting are project elements.
King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks will remove and relocate the 1,400 lineal-foot Porter training leveeto reconnect the Green River with 52 acres of associated floodplain.Thisproject willbe implementedat the county-owned natural area on the left bank of the Middle Green River (River Mile 34), two miles upriver of the City of Auburn. This action will significantlyimprove spawning, rearing, and refuge habitatfor Chinook and steelhead, and other salmonid species throughout this reach. This project is a priority because it would greatly enhance off-river habitat for Chinook and steelhead in an area that is currently not used by these fish species because the levee restricts riverine-floodplain interaction.Project elements also include installing at leastseven large engineered logstructures and planting over 10,000 native riparian trees and shrubs.A setback levee will be constructed adjacent to Green Valley Road to protect the road and other infrastructure. To date, adjacent landowner support has been excellent.
