DESCRIPTION
The Porter Levee Section 1135 Project involves restoration of the Green River connection to an isolated side channel along the left bank of the Green River at river mile 35, just east of Auburn. Side channel habitat allowing salmon refuge from high flows and overwintering habitat for juveniles is currently extremely limited along the middle Green River. This project will demonstrate an approach to restoring these functions. This project is ready to be constructed this August, 1999. All necessary permits have been applied for and received. A Biological Assessment has been prepared with a "Not Likely to Adversely Affect" determination, and concurrence with this determination has been received from the National Marine Fisheries Service. The side channel will be connected by excavating an entrance through the downstream end of the Porter Levee, as well as a high flow notch approximately 700 feet further upstream. This reconnection will establish fish access to an 7 acre side channel and will enhance 13 additional acres. The project will also include a hand-excavated connection to a smaller intermittent tributary stream, installation of large woody debris, and replanting of much of the site with native vegetation. The property is just over 35 acres and has recently been purchased by King County for the purposes of restoring the side channel. The project has the support of Trout Unlimited and several other conservation organizations.
