DESCRIPTION
SPU used an earlier SRFB grant to purchase approximately 3.8 acres out of the 12.65 acre property on the lower Cedar River in King County. This project is part of larger efforts by SPU and King County to protect and restore habitat for Chinook, coho and sockeye salmon, and steelhead trout in the Cedar River. The property is located in the Belmondo Reach of the Cedar River, four miles north of the City of Maple Valley on WA Hwy.169. The project protected some of the best remaining salmon habitat in the lower Cedar River. Protection of this land provides continuity in the larger reach, securing the missing link in a one-mile chain of protected lands up- and downstream, preventing development of potentially three new homes where salmon utilization is well documented and habitat features and ecological function are relatively intact. The property contains high-quality side channel and backwater habitats and some remnant side channels which serve as excellent flood refuge habitat during high flow events. Salmon surveys conducted by SPU since 1999 document heavy sockeye spawning and numerous Chinook redds annually at this location.
