DESCRIPTION
King County used this grant, along with funding from WDFW and USFWS, to acquire seven parcels totaling 16.6 acres. The long range vision for this reach of the Cedar River is to create a floodplain corridor of open space surrounding an unconfined river that contains complex channel and bar formations and substantial deposits of large woody debris. The contiguous parcels occur on the upstream half of this riparian corridor from rivermile 11.0 to 11.4. This project was important to do at this time because of the availabity of funding partners and documented willing landowners. The aquatic habitat conditions for salmonids on the lower Cedar River had been drastically altered, impairing the processes that form and maintain habitat in the river. These changes have led to impacts at the project site, including loss of floodplain connectivity, removal of riparian and overhanging vegetation, loss of instream habitat complexity due to removal of woody debris, and a reduction in the number and depth of pools. Restoration activities can now occur on the acquired land, thereby adding to the habitat base of the Lower Cedar River. The Cedar River is among the highly important Tier 1 areas in the larger WRIA 8 drainage and this project is recommended in the WRIA's Draft Conservation Plan.
