DESCRIPTION
Pierce County Surface Water Management constructed Phase I of a three phase project to increase off-channel habitat and floodplain connectivity along the Puyallup River, north of Orting, WA. Phase 1 work included construction
of 2,000-feet of side channel, associated engineered log jam structures and a perimeter access road, in the south portion (upstream end) of the project site.
Phase 2A work included construction of 1,100-feet of side channel and associated Engineered Log Jam
(ELJ) structures, in the north portion (downstream end) of the project site.
The final Phase 2B work included construction of the middle portion of the side channel that fully
connected the side channel together from the inlet end and to the outlet. The work also included construction of
associated ELJ structures and temporary (longer term) bridge structure. In addition, the Phase 2B work involved
relocation of existing utilities gas main and fiber optic cables.
The side channel was designed and built for active sediment and gravel transport through the channel at a 5-year recurrence flow rate and greater. The completed project provides and replenishes important spawning gravel for Chinook Salmon, steelhead and other salmonid species. A base flow will be sustained in the channel year round for salmonid and other fish use. The county planted native vegetation throughout the project area with separate funds outside of this grant.
