DESCRIPTION
Pierce County Surface Water Management constructed Phase I of a three phase project to increase off-channel habitat and floodplain connectivity along the Puyallup River, north of Orting, WA. The Phase I scope of work included construction of a 1,900 Lin-Ft left bank major side channel at the south end of the South Fork Floodplain Restoration project site. The side channel inlet begins on the left bank at about river mile 18.4 and ties into the main river channel near river mile 17.9. Forty log jams, 10 boulder channel roughness structures, and 9 floodplain roughness trees were placed in and along the side channel for fish habitat and channel complexity. The side channel was designed and built for active sediment and gravel transport through the channel at a 5-year recurrence flow rate and greater. The completed project will provide and replenish important spawning gravel for Chinook Salmon, steelhead and other salmonid species. A base flow will be sustained in the channel year round for salmonid and other fish use. The county planted native vegetation throughout the project area with separate funds outside of this grant. All 2010FY funds where spent during the award period of 7/1/2010 to 6/30/2015.
