DESCRIPTION
Pierce County, the Puyallup and Muckleshoot Tribes, WA Dept. of Fish & Wildlife, and Forterra seek to return the floodplain and adjoining Fennel Creek to a self-sustaining natural state which includes a properly functioning river bankline, forested floodplain, and a meandering stream. The subject property has been identified by these partners for its benefit to multiple salmonids - particularly threatened Chinook and Steelhead as well as Fall Chum, Pink, and Coho salmon - at both their spawning and rearing phases of their life cycles. Finally, while thousands of fish return to the property every year to spawn, recent research has shown that channelization and low large woody debris in the creek prevent creation of deep pools of water critical to salmonids for both spawning and rearing.  Once acquired, design will begin on proposed actions at the Fennel Creek Site, include removal of existing levees and revetments and construction of new levees farther back from the Puyallup River. Approximately 4,207 linear feet of existing levees and revetments located along the right (east) bank of the Puyallup River between Puyallup RM 15.2 and RM 16 will be removed and a new armored levee of approximately 3,304 linear feet would be set back from the Puyallup River to the east, encompassing an area of approximately 2,099,429 square feet (48.2 acres). The project would not reconnect the Puyallup River with riparian vegetation and remnant side-channel/wetland habitat as well as a major tri
