DESCRIPTION
Pierce County removed about 700 feet of rip rap revetment along the right bank of the Puyallup River, just upstream of its confluence with Fennel Creek. Then contoured the floodplain with swales to encourage floodplain engagement during moderate (10 year occurrence interval or higher) flood events, removed invasive vegetation, and planted 25 acres of floodplain with native plants. The completed project will allow the banks to slowly erode and add cover and flow diversity to the Puyallup River for juvenile and adult salmon. In addition, Pierce County completed final designs to re-locate and configure the lower 0.46 mile of Fennel Creek to provide increased spawning and rearing habitat for salmon. The project site is located north of the city of Orting. This project built upon a previous design project finished in March 2011 (SRFB project #07-1904), which developed preliminary designs for the Puyallup River revetment and floodplain restoration work,. Levee and revetment removals are a high priority action of the Lead Entity Strategy for salmon recovery in this watershed. Fennel Creek is a priority stream providing important spawning and rearing habitat to multiple species of salmon; it had been degraded by past agricultural practices. The goals of the project were to restore Puyallup River channel edge, flood plain and Fennel Creek to increase salmon habitat. Chinook salmon, steelhead, Bull Trout, Chum Salmon, Coho Salmon, Pink Salmon, and Cutthroat Trout will be supported by t
