The project was constructed as described in the agreement description during the summer of 2015. Immediately after the sandbags were pulled and the stream entered the new channel adult pink salmon entered the project. A month later thousands of spawning pinks filled the pools we created. The channel has also been documented to have been used by Chinook, steelhead, coho and chum salmon. In 2016 26 Chinook redds were counted one day in the constructed portion of the stream channel. The old stream channel still stays perennially watered with a few cfs and provides excellent juvenile rearing habitat. During a 40 day period in 2015 and soon after construction (late October to mid December) the Puyallup watershed was hit with three large storms, approximately a 15, 25 and 40 year events. These storms mobilized large sediment loads into the Puyallup River valley wall streams including Fennel Creek. Over 700 c. y. of material washed into the alluvial fan area of the creek filling the first pool and creating many braided side channels which reformed into the constructed channel quickly. This was the event that was anticipated in the original agreement description above. We are fortunate to have constructed the channel just in the nick of time. This fan formation was not expected to happen so quickly and some of the braided side channels were devoid of wood or other complexity. Therefore we initiated a phase 2 effort that used existing surplus logs and boulders to roughen the new fan in the summer of 2016. This was a simple and quick project (2 days with excavator) which was completed without the need for an agreement addendum. Today the stream is stable, full of juvenile coho and ready for the next round of pink and Chinook adults to arrive shortly.
