DESCRIPTION
Permanently protect 0.06 miles of North Fork Manzanita Creek and 7.9 acres of adjacent riparian forests and wetlands and restore degraded vegetation to improve riparian habitat function. The project area is within the 25-acre Manzanita Ridge parcel, 0.35 miles upstream from where North Fork Manzanita Creek enters Little Manzanita Bay. Manzanita Watershed is approximately 2,295 acres with over 3 miles of fish habitat stream upstream draining about 500 of these acres through the project area. There are no fish passage barriers below the project area, following a culvert replacement on NE Bergman Rd in 2005. The lower segment of Manzanita Creek is the only creek on Bainbridge Island to have adult Coho and chum detected consecutively over the past six years and has historically produced the most consistent fall salmon detections on Bainbridge Island. This acquisition builds on prior projects (Little Manzanita Phase I and II SRFB 18-1471, 18-1472, and Manzanita III, PPFL 23-24-57), moving upstream along North Fork Manzanita Creek to protect a continuous 0.43 miles of stream above the estuary. This project area is undeveloped but habitat function is compromised by very high densities of various invasive plants. Protection of the property and vegetation restoration will further enhance stream conditions important for Coho, chum and cutthroat fish inhabiting the on-site and downstream system.
